  • About Porthcawl

Porthcawl is a tourist town located in the south coast of Wales in the borough of Bridgend. This low limestone headland, overlooks the Bristol Channel and has several beaches, two of which have been awarded the Blue Flag.

With a population in excess of 16,000, Porthcawl developed as a port during the coal mining years in the 19th century. Trade however was lost out to nearby Barry, which managed to develop more quickly than Porthcawl.

As a holiday resort, Porthcawl has developed over the years to accommodate tourists, which has seen the building of the largest static caravan park in Europe, Trecco Bay, several hotels and restaurants, a Grand Pavilion, and three gold courses. The Grand Pavilion, which was built in 1932, hosts a variety of shows including an annual pantomime held every Christmas.

Built in 1887 to celebration Queen Victoria’s Jubilee, Porthcawl Promenade runs the length of its seafront and joins with its eastern side former promenade. The Princess Road Train runs along the promenade during the summer months. Porthcawl also has its own Coney Beach Fun Fair, which was modelled on New York’s Coney Island and an annual carnival that takes place in July every year with its procession of themed floats, which ends up at carnival field where you will find a fun fair, lots of stalls and plenty of entertainment.

Porthcawl is the location for some of the best surfing competitions in Wales, which are held at Rest Bay. Other sports teams in the area include Porthcawl RFC, Bridgend Blue Bulls Rugby League side and the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club.
